On the 16th of March, the Charity Law of the People’s Republic of China was passed by the fourth meeting of the 12th National People’s Congress with 2636 pros, 131 cons, and 83 abstentions. Chinese grassroots organizations receive an average score of 32.44 in transparency index

The recently released <Transparency Report of China Grassroots Philanthropic Organizations (2015)>(《中国民间公益组织透明度发展研究报告(2015)》) has provided some interesting facts regarding the development of Chinese NGOs. Launched by the Union of Self-Disciplinary Organizations (USDO), the report includes 1738 philanthropic institutions, covering 17 domains of activity. The average score given by the 2015 China Grassroots Transparency Index (GTI) was 32.44, which represents a big progress compared to the previous year’s 27.87. On March 16, the Charity Law of the People’s Republic of China was passed by the fourth meeting of the 12th National People’s Congress with 2636 pros, 131 cons, and 83 abstentions. The law will come into force on September 1st, 2016. As the first ever law of its kind, the Charity Law clarifies the definition of charity activities, regulates the establishment and operation of charity organizations and the sources and use of charitable property and charitable services, and strives to promote the cause of charity. A lawsuit on air pollution put on record in Shandong

Friends of Nature (FON) filed a lawsuit for air pollution against the Shandong Jingling Chemical Corporation Limited on the 19th of January. The lawsuit was put on record in the Intermediate People’s Court of Dongying city, Shandong Province, following the Civil Procedure Law, the new Environmental Protection Law and the Law on the Prevention and Control of Air Pollution which only came into effect this year. FON learned from public reports that the emissions of air pollutants by the Shandong Jingling Chemical Corporation Limited continually exceeded the standards, and its air pollution improvement facilities were continually used in an abnormal way.
