17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
Voices of Chinese Overseas (VOCO)
Following the Belt and Road initiative, the footprint of Chinese people is now across the world: Africa, South America, Southeast Asia… Who are they really? What are they doing? What kind of life are they living? How are they integrating? Overtime, international organizations and international media have had a lot of misunderstandings towards them.
Since China House’s foundation, it has conducted extensive research on Chinese people living abroad. Researchers investigated their lives and work profoundly, to understand all aspects of their life, and realistically documented their condition through articles and videos. This information is then spread to help the world gain an objective understanding.
The project's impact:
• Investigating the current conditions and challenges faced by Chinese mining companies in Africa in collaboration with WWF, and presenting a research report on the Chinese mining industry.
• Collaborating with the John Hopkins University to research the actual conditions of Chinese enterprises in Kenya facing labor issues.
• Cooperating with TRAFFIC, an international wildlife conservation organization, to complete a research report on the topic of the Chinese diaspora in Uganda and the wildlife trade. This investigates the relationships between Chinese residents in Africa and wildlife protection.
• In Ethiopia, China House investigates the corporate social responsibility of Chinese factories and the real conditions in Chinese communities. China House initiated the “Voice of Chinese Overseas” (VOCO) project, and organized students to create the related website (vocochina.org).

African Tech Challenge (ATC)
In Africa, Chinese companies generally face the issue of not finding workers with the necessary skillsets. On the other hand, the local unemployment rate among the young is high, as many cannot find a job. Facing this situation, China House assists Chinese companies to design and execute the social corporate responsibility project “Africa Tech Challenge” (ATC). It offers technical training to the African youth to help them become qualified technicians.
The project's impact:
• After the initial conception by China House, the matured competition is now hosted directly by Chinese enterprises. Until today it has been constantly increasing in scale.
• One of the rare corporate social responsibility project of a Chinese state-owned enterprise that matches the global standards.
• Reported by media including CCTV and CGTN.
