The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is an international nonprofit environmental organization with more than 3 million members and online supporters. With a highly effective team of more than 30 people based in our Beijing office, NRDC China Program have worked hard at both the national and local levels to recommend, develop, and help implement innovative laws, policies, technologies, and market tools that conserve natural resources, curb pollution and accelerate China's transition to a clean, low-carbon economy. NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration of China.
NRDC is seeking a Communications Officer to work with the Coal Cap team in our Beijing office. The Communications Officer will be responsible for leading communications activities to reach out to stakeholders, including policymakers, industry representatives, academics and NGOs, and traditional and social media. The Communications Officer will develop a strategy for communicating the project findings and insights for maximum impact, develop factsheets and other materials needed to communicate project findings, and manage the development of media pieces on energy-related issues.
This is a full-time consultant position. The selected candidate will be offered for an initial term of one year, with the potential to extend based on program needs and funding availability.
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy to raise the visibility of Coal Cap research and increase the impact of our work. This would include using various communications channels and leveraging issues of public interest to reach out to multiple influential audiences, with compelling stories and messages drawn from our work that show how measures that reduce coal consumption can contribute to China’s national development strategy.
Develop communications materials for the Coal Cap team, including but not limited to, website content, factsheets, newsletter, and short summaries of project analysis, press release, that present analysis and recommendations from project reports into digestible communications for target audience.
Engage key stakeholders, including policymakers, local governments and key sectors and industry associations to develop support for energy and environmental policy advocacy. This would include organizing roundtables and closed-door meetings with key stakeholders and strategically disseminating findings and recommendations from the Coal Cap research to engage these key stakeholders on the need to limit fossil fuel consumption.
Build a network of media channels and a plan for engaging each media channel to maximize communication impact. This would include analyzing each media channel’s target audience and developing appropriate media content.
Provide suggestions/talking points and help with coordination of interviews, and provide editorial support to original articles related to limiting fossil fuel consumption and climate change issues.
Coordinate with other NGOs who are also working on addressing similar issues to maximize communication opportunities and ensure messaging consistency.
Perform other assignments to support NRDC’s overall communications objectives as needed.
Minimum of 3 years of full-time work experience in communications field, preferably related to energy or environmental policy.
Master’s degree in communications, public policy, international development, or a related field (or bachelor's degree with 2 additional years of relevant experience).
Excellent communication, research and writing skills in both Chinese and English. Ability to communicate clearly and consistently with a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
Proven experience in developing and implementing communications strategies.
Ability to work cooperatively with media and stakeholders, including policymakers, industry, and NGOs.
Able to work in a fast-paced environment and work under pressure managing multiple tasks to meet deadlines.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, highly motivated, proactive work style, detail-oriented, accountable, and with excellent organizational skills
