Full-page environmental ad draws flak

By Cang Wei, China Daily, February 21, 2013

Wenzhou Environmental Protection Bureau took out a full-page ad promoting its work after two residents challenged EPB officials to swim in polluted rivers, raising the ire of the public. The ad, which cost RMB 140,000, was criticized as a waste of organization funds. The ad’s content, which noted that Wenzhou was recognized as a provincial model for environmental protection in 2012 and that public satisfaction with the environment has reportedly increased 4.6 percent, was also criticized in light of the two recent incidents in which residents publicly questioned the effectiveness of the bureau in addressing river pollution.
