  • Why do these public interest organizations vanish?

On July 20th, the Xinjiang Foundation for Women and Children held a meeting in which 20 public interest orgainzations participated. The Xinjiang Youth Promotion Association was one of them. This organization holds a directory aiming at keeping track of the social organizations covering different sectors in the region. In this article, its vice-secretary general explains that they have registered around 150 organizations but that more than 20 of them, who had lifespans between 3 and 5 years have been unreachable for some time.

These organizations were working in all kinds of sectors and communicated mainly through QQ groups. The author explains their disappearance by the fact that most of them relied heavily on volunteers for holding activities and financial support. When these volunteers do not have time or have financial difficulties, the organization cannot continue its work. Further, these organizations often lack professional personnel and a clear strategy to raise funds, reasons why their development is hindered. Finally, some of the interviewed organizations feel that they lack support from the government.
